One of the first times I ever memorized a significant portion of scripture was when my youth pastor in high school made an entire song out of Psalm 19:7-11 and taught it to us at camp. Since the words were carried on a beautiful melody, we learned the entire thing in just a couple days. We learned that song over 25 years ago but recently when I asked on social media, every one of the girls that learned it said they still remember part or most of it to this day! The last part of the repeating chorus said "...sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb." In songwriting, we call that the "hook"; the part that gets stuck in your head. How cool to get scripture "stuck in your head"!
I intended to do that exact thing with the songs on my upcoming album; I wanted these songs, mostly scripture to be easy to remember and sing along to because on any given day, there are countless thoughts that try to enter our minds. They often sound like a bully or an outright sinister attack but God's word gives us the exact words that we need to do battle against those dark thoughts!
Another huge reason for the honeycomb is the family significance for me. My husband's family kept bees and harvested honey for a number of years and though I never took the opportunity to put on the bee-suit myself, I have always been fascinated with bees and the structure of honeycomb. It's symmetry, geometric strength and efficiency and all the purposes it serves; its simply mind-blowing to me! I urge you to do even a tiny bit of research and see how many spiritual parallels you can draw from the work and life of bees! I left a link below for you to check it out. I wear a gold honeycomb charm on my necklace nearly everyday to celebrate my appreciation for this exquisite illustration of strength and beauty.
Lastly, Proverbs says that kind words are like honeycomb. One of my upcoming songs, "Vigilance" is a reminder that there is profound power in the words that we speak to others. They can either be sweet and healing, like honey or they can be a bitter poison. We choose!
