I began production on this EP shortly after the sudden death of my dad and during the pandemic that immediately followed. Meanwhile, the covers were being ripped off the longtime hurt in the black community and as a result, fear was everywhere! When my world was falling apart, these songs were my armor. The lyrics are scriptures, taken directly from The Message Bible. In most cases, 100% of the song is scripture and in the others, I wrote the verses and used the scripture for the chorus. The practice of putting scripture to music has been around for thousands of years, as a means of meditation and memorization. My particular spin on this practice was to take scriptures that may not be the first choice in a Sunday School classroom and put them to music that was a little more heavy and dark than is usually heard in a church. These are not your average bright and cheery Christian songs, all wrapped up in a bright bow with crosses and doves on it. The lyrics are heavy; the music broody and emotional; the subject matter, unapologetically weighty. Not always do our hard questions come with easy answers. My intentions are to simply bring my hard questions before the God of the universe who has all the answers. I pray the scripture content get more stuck in your head than you are. And most of all, I pray these words REMIND YOU TO NOT BE AFRAID!
